NGO's responsible for high rate of accidents

This news item brought a smile to my face this morning.

Not only are they corrupt, ineffective and responsible for undermining the sovereignty of the country they are also causing accidents.

And here I was, blaming the speeding VIP convoys for many accidents. It is only now that we learn the truth.

I have been told that one of the causes for accidents are the lousy brakes on the Land Rovers. Land Rovers, being typical British cars, have a reputation for mechanical problems and on top of that the brakes are supposed to be pretty bad which makes for a lethal combination.

Why these vehicles are so popular is a bit of a mystery but they are reputed to be good performers-chiefly due to the light aluminium body which gives and excellent weight/power ratio. Indeed the rugged body is one of the main strengths of the vehicle.

The rest is largely due its reputation which is bolstered by the cinema. As for me, give me the Toyota Landcruiser or Nissan Patrol anyday.

:) "not only are they responsible for undermining the sovereignity of the country...". So true. they should just get rid of all these guys.

especially the ones in menik farm and all. Didiots still trying to resurrect the tiger cause. Our doctors were doing so well without them (yes, they may strike once in a way, bbut that's it no). heard that the Rajapakse's nephew had gone to rwanda with one of these NGo types- investigating war crimes or some shit like that. apprently died in a pool of blood. Must be karma, no?:) bloody ngo types, no court jester. Why can't all the world be bloggers?:D

you know, as much as i hate to admit it, there's probably an element of truth in what the police guy says (though imo, it's put in a totally simpistic way in the paper). especially in post-conflict areas, it's the NGOs (god, how i hate the connotations of that acronym) and police/forces that have big vehicles and they're all very obnoxious on the road - tooting the horn and speeding all over the roads.

PP, yes I agree. What the spokesman said was probably true of Vavuniya and maybe the former conflict zone.

The newspapers take on the problem was rather amusing, though.
